About Abecio

Your child's own words matter

My own child inspired Abecio. Looking at shop-bought picture alphabets, I noticed that their words were not always the ones my child thought of. The same picture might be called “autó” in a book but “kocsi” by a Hungarian child. It is easy to try to fit a child's thinking to a ready-made word.

I want my child's thinking to stay free: to help shape their world instead of always adapting to ready-made answers. When a picture brings something to mind, I want to listen, rather than insist on another name.

That's why I made Abecio: the child says the word, the parent writes it down, and the picture goes with its letter. Children can discover letters through their own familiar words.

Time together, an alphabet of your own

Look at the pictures together, listen to what your child sees, and collect as many as you feel like. There is no need to finish in one sitting, and you can leave out difficult letters. Print the finished alphabet and put your shared creation on the wall.

Free for everyone

I only wanted to bring this idea to life if everyone could use it. Abecio and its printable alphabets are free, without registration. Families, kindergartens, schools and other organisations are welcome.
